The Wood Spinner

The Wood Spinner aka John Horsfall is the artist responsible for the creations on this site.

As a young man, John trained as a chef, but was unable to continue as a result of a serious back injury. During his time away from the kitchen John spent time working at Odlins Timber in Newmarket on the 12inch recut saw, cutting 5metre flitches of exotic timbers. He also worked on bone carving, jewellery making and turning ponga.

In 2008 John decided to return to the cooking industry, and updated his qualifications. He gained a Diploma in Culinary Arts and Patisserie.

Finding it extremely hard to work due to his earlier injuries, John sought another occupation.

This led to purchasing a lathe in June 2014 to keep him busy whilst not working and subsequently he found that he was a natural at wood turning and displayed advanced artistic abilities in his turning. John has only been spinning wood since June 2014.

John has spent hundreds of hours watching You Tube clips on woodturning and learning techniques from the best wood turners in the world.

After making a few rolling pins and a couple of bowls, he put them on Trade Me and they were snapped up pretty quickly. So, after discussion between him and his wife, they decided to invest in a small wood turning business, buying more equipment and turning their garage into a workshop. It is from here that the Wood Spinner produces his creations and offers them for purchase on the web.
